The building was designed to commemorate the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War in 1899. It was built in the grounds of the cemetery for interned women and children. The project received International recognition: Selected as part of the South African exhibition of the 2005 Sao Paulo International Architecture Biennale Exhibition. Published in The World Architecture magazine 2005. Received the SA Institute of Architects, President's Award in 2008.
