Award of Merit Citation

The house reflects admirably the vernacular of the southern Cape, with reference made to the typical traditional simple barn-like configuration and corrugated-iron roofs. The carefully considered detailing throughout the house retains a simplicity and is appropriate to the environment of the building. The use of materials as well as the placing of the building in the landscape is appropriate and climatically the house responds well to the extremely strong prevailing offshore winds by utilising the device of a central northwest facing court nestling between the two wings of the building. A high level of finishing of a complex construction has been achieved, resulting in a seaside home of high merit.
