Ella Street Houses

Award of Merit Citation
The two houses restore to the streetscape of the Bo-Kaap the quality of neighbourhood through their small scale, and their positive relation to the street. The siting of the houses on the mountain is discreet - a quality that seems to be rare in Cape Town at present.
The typology used refers to the small scaled, street facing, middle class house. Within the contained form - each displays a spatial virtuosity that excites the senses and results in a rich experience of architectural relationships that come about as a result of movement through the spaces, by changes of speed of progression and how and where forms are penetrated by void. The planning is sensible and pragmatic yet allows for a spiritual sense of living. There is a tremendous feeling of connectedness between dweller and place, which makes for a project of merit.
