Klompie bricks

These are traditional small handmade Dutch bricks, used mainly for edging on steps, fireplaces, verandas, etc. These were often brought into the Dutch colonies as of the late C15 until the end of Dutch colonialism as ship ballast and deposited where cargo was loaded, in South Africa then particularly Cape Town, where fired clay products from the Netherlands were much sought after, the local clays not being considered good for brick-making. Theses are still manufactured today by specialist brick farms. The standard size is +- 160 x 75 x 35 mm.
