Willhelmus Hendrik Vermeulen's family came to Johannesburg to work for NZASM in about 1895. It seems he was mainly employed on the Rand Tram.

At the age of about 17 Willhelmus Hendrik Vermeulen's son joined the NZASM. As the SA War grew closer the family returned to Rotterdam but work there was scarce. By then and because his son spoke English it was decided that he should remain in Johannesburg (at the age of 18) and continue with the company. After the war he went with the company to the Cape South African Railways (CSAR).

Information and photographs supplied by Dirk Vermeulen, his grandson. The photograph is of group of NZASM employees at an unknown station, Dirk thinks that the man with Bowler hat is his grandfather.
