Bernard Cooke, Temple of Karnak, Luxor, Egypt, 1942 Bernard Cooke hated the war and being away from his family, but he made the most of being in Egypt. He had two rather extraordinary people in his tent. Paul Friede was a German, presumably against the Reich and cleared security-wise, with two doctorates: in psychology and archaeology, and was something of an Egyptologist. The other was Merlyn Evans, who was, or became quite an important British painter. The three of them explored ancient Egypt in every free moment. This was taken in the temple of Karnak in Luxor. It would have been 1942, so Bernard would have been 32 and had already completed House Stern and Aiton Court etc. (Julian Cooke, October 2014) Submitted by William MARTINSON Photographer: Unidentified
