ARIBA 1907; Mem Soc Archts Egypt 1907; ATA 1909; NIA Council 1916, 1928-31; FRIBA 1925; Vice-Pres NPIA 1930,1931; FSA 1921 Was born in Brisbane, Australia, the younger brother of JA MOFFAT, and came to South Africa with his family after his father died in Australia, about 1895/96. He was articled from 1896 to 1899 to CARTER & McINTOSH in Johannesburg; from 1899-1901? he spent eighteen months in Cape Town in W BLACK's office, returning to Johannesburg in 1901 and re-entering the office of McINTOSH & MOFFAT (the name of the firm had changed after Carter's death). WG remained in this office until 1905, leaving for London around 1906. In London he was employed by H Harton from 1906 until 1907 and sat the RIBA examination in 1907, by which date he was living in Alexandria, Egypt and was elected an Associate member of the RIBA (1907). He worked in Egypt for about three years before leaving for Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) in 1910. He opened an office in Salisbury (Harare) where he married but went to Durban during the First World War. Here, in 1916, he joined the Natal Institute of Architects and settled in Durban where he practised for the rest of his life. From 1917 JA and WG Moffat were in partnership (cf MOFFAT JA & WG), the latter being the Durban partner. The partnership continued until 1925 when JA entered partnership with his son, JAC MOFFAT, and with WA KELL (cf MOFFAT, SON & KELL). WG Moffat continued to practise on his own account in Durban until he entered into partnership with W HIRST (cf MOFFAT & HIRST) in about 1934. In 1936 the partners were placed fourth in the competition for King Edward VIII Hospital, Durban. The partnership continued until 1944 when WG appears to have retired. WG Moffat's son, JB MOFFAT, was also an architect, who continued the practice as MOFFAT, SIMPSON & PARTNERS - JB MOFFAT and JS SIMPSON - and partners. WG Moffat died at his home at 55 Springfield Road in Durban in 1949.
