Born in London, Reid practised in Plymouth, England from 1856 to 1877 when he left for Cape Town, probably for reasons of health, taking his family. He appears to have established an office in Cape Town where his sons received a start in their training. Reid was a founder member of the Engineering and Architectural Association of South Africa, Cape Town 1884. His three sons, Arthur REID, Harry REID and Walter REID all became architects.
