BOMPAS, EG

Born: fl. 1888
Died: 1894

Architect

Was employed as an architect in the service of the Colonial Engineer, Natal, from 1888 to 1894, when he lost the job. He then applied to the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT for employment as clerk of works for the new Colonial Offices building in Pietermaritzburg. In December 1894 he was appointed temporary resident architect and assisted in surveying the competitive designs for the new Offices, acting as clerk of works until 1897. He was removed from the post at the request of WH POWELL, the architect of the new building, having allegedly shirked duties and accepted private commissions. Bompas was subsequently employed in a minor position in the drawing office of the Public Works Department. He was permitted to continue his private practice, which he did until about 1901. No death certificate for him has been found in South African sources. The Natal Mounted Police Barracks (c1898) in Pietermaritzburg is attributed to him.
