Worked in the Orange Free State from about 1880 in association with Gustav HALLE, who was then Inspector of Public Works, Bloemfontein. A civil engineer who had trained in Berlin, Schurman advertised himself in Bloemfontein in 1881 as a civil engineer, architect, water-colourist, railway engineer and stated also that he could design churches and Houses etc 'op te maken'. He was still in Bloemfontein in 1884 working as a contractor for telegraph lines after which nothing more was heard of him.
