Nothing is yet known of Snell's training. He was first recorded in South Africa in 1882 working in Pietermaritzburg. In 1887 he was appointed clerk of works on the Legislative Assembly Building in Pietermaritzburg. According to the Natal Almanac (1890-1891) he had an office in Pietermaritzburg by this date. By 1892 he was in Johannesburg in partnership with J WATERSON (cf SNELL & WATERSON), the source for this information is Waterson's RIBA nomination papers. Snell was listed living in Doornfontein, Johannesburg in 1897. The partnership with Waterson ended in about 1898.
His name is sometimes found spelt Schnell.
