Menu Home Upfront Now Up Books Towns Structures People Firms Lexicon STEWARDSON, Robert Ernest Born: fl. 1894 Died: 1908/9 Architect Was in South Africa for about three years (c1905-8) before moving on to work in Shanghai. He trained in Edinburgh where he was apprenticed to RM Cameron in October 1894 for four years; he later spent a year in London with W Henry White, FRIBA, and three years with George Hornblower, FRIBA, who remarked that Stewardson was 'an indefatigable student at the Architectural Association' (Stewardson's ARIBA nomination papers; these papers were signed by D MacGILLIVRAY in London in 1904 on Stewardson's becoming an Associate member of the RIBA). Stewardson then entered the public service in Britain. He was first with HM Office of Works and then with the London County Council and was next recorded as working in Bloemfontein for the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT, Orange River Colony, where he was employed as a draughtsman from August 1905. By 1908 /1909 he was listed in the RIBA Kalendar as working in Shanghai. Joined AA 1900 1902 Won Andrew Oliver Prize – for measured drawings and sketches of historic buildings. June 1902 passed the RIBA Intermediate exam June 1904 passed the RIBA Final exam (Edward Bottoms, Archivist, Architectural Association) There is also a listing of this practitioner on the Dictionary of Scottish Architects.
