Was probably born in South Africa; he studied architecture at the University of the Witwatersrand, qualifying in 1935, and graduating with a Diploma in Architecture in March 1936. Throughout the period he was studying at the university, he was working as first assistant and then chief assistant to DL NURCOMBE. He became a partner in the firm (cf. Summerley enlisted for active service during the Second World War, serving in the Engineering Corps. He returned to practice and the partnership after the war. The practice remained in Johannesburg and was responsible for some outstanding buildings 'not only for their size but competency in handling such large mass achieving monumental form in Chrysler Building' (Herbert 1975:268).
