Born in Germany, Von Buchenroder became an officer in the British Army and arrived at the Cape in 1806, left the army and set up as a merchant and building contractor in Grahamstown, where he apparently received contracts for three government buildings in 1813 but eventually lost them by 1817 since he could not complete them in time. He then set up as a general dealer in Uitenhage, Cape. He eventually turned unsuccessfully to farming.
