Born in Benoni on 14 April 1919, Barry matriculated in 1936 and enrolled for the Diploma Course in Architecture at the University of the Witwatersrand, but only completed 4½ years of the course. By 1940 he was employed by the DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS (DPW) in Pretoria as an Architectural Draughtsman. He subsequently decided to assist the War effort and enrolled with the Union Defence Force in the SAAF on 8 July 1940, training as an Observer. He survived active service and was demobbed with the rank of Lieutenant in November 1945.
William Prescott OSMOND was practicing in East London prior to WW2 with Cyril LANE, with their practice styled as LANE and OSMOND. Barry Lange had presumably met Osmond, either at the DPW or during the war, as Osmond served as an Officer interpreting Aerial Photographs. Shortly after WWII, they formed an architectural practice styled as OSMOND + LANGE ARCHITECTS.
