BArch (Cape Town) The son of Hadjie Ishak Jassiem in Cape Town. He received his primary school education at St Paul's EC Primary School (1955-1962) and high school education at Harold Cressy High School (1963 - 1966). On matriculating he commenced his architectural studies at the Cape Town School of Architecture (1967-1975) where he was a member of the Muslim Student Association as well as playing cricket, doing gymnastics, partaking in the drama society and playing chess. He graduated in 1975 with a design thesis titled 'Proposed School Complex for the Institute of Islamic Shariah Studies.' After graduation he did a brief spell as Civil Technician with Hill Kaplan Scott and Partners (1977) and acted as architect for Taurus Precast on industrialized buildings. In July 1978 he founded and was the sole proprietor and principal architect of M WASFIE JASSIEM Architects and Associates until September 2005. Thereafter he was appointed as Chief Architect of General Buildings to the Western Cape Government (April 2006 - June 2013). At present he consults for Jakoet and Associates. His extra-professional activities include acting as Public Relations Officer and Treasurer of the Cape Muslim Students Association of South Africa (1969-1974) of which he remains an ex-officio member; Director of the Islamic Early Learning Foundation, which he helped found in 1972, being its First General Secretary in 1974; and Executive Member (Housing) of the Schotsche Kloof Civic Association.
