WEGELIN, Hans Willem

Born: 1940 03 10

Architect

BArch 1964 (Pretoria)

Hans Willem WEGELIN was born in Utrecht, the Netherlands, in 1940. In 1947, the future looking bleak after the war (his mother died during the war years), his violinist father Arthur decided to emigrate to South Africa with his two children where he soon remarried and settled in Potchefstroom.

Hans matriculated at Potchefstroom Gimnasium and went on to study Architecture at the University of Pretoria.

After graduating he worked in Cape Town for architect Chris LOCHNER for a year. Finding the pace too slow, he got married and took a job in Vanderbijlpark with FA KEMP and JT KEMP where he was mainly involved with housing contracts in Sasolburg for SASOL.

In 1969 he moved to Pretoria where he joined the Kemps under the style of KEMP, KEMP AND WEGELIN.

His main projects are:

  • the industrial mushroom town of Secunda for the second SASOL plant, where, apart from thousands of houses, his firm designed many of the commercial buildings, the police building, post office, bank etc.
  • several schools
  • the Police Quartermaster building in Silverton, Pretoria
  • the conversion of the old Mint Building in Visagie street, Pretoria into the National Cultural History Museum (The African Window)

Apart from a busy practice Hans took on a teaching post at the Department of Architecture of the University of Pretoria in 1970, being promoted to senior lecturer in 1986 and associate professor in 1999. He completed his M.Arch in 1987 on the subject of a retrieval system for building information including the development of a thesaurus of building terms, subsequently developing this into the first computer information retrieval system in the country to run on a personal computer. The system is still running and the database may be searched on the internet.

Hans has authored four books on construction and specification, and written 35 articles in peer-reviewed journals.

He stopped practicing in 1995, and retired from University in 2005. He is still active in the field of specification writing, having been appointed by the DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS to revise their standard building specification.

He is married to Lucette. They have two daughters, Wytske and Paula, and two sons, Willem and Jan, and eight grandchildren.

He likes to potter in his back yard, is interested in solar solutions to energy problems, and cycles to keep fit.

2013 10 01 - Receives the PIA President's Award.
