Obituary published by SAIA:

Stanley Harold Segal was born in Pretoria on 14 December 1938 before the second World War. After matriculating at Pretoria Boys High School Stan registered at the University of Pretoria for the Bachelor of Architecture course. After his third year of study and due to financial complications, he changed to the Diploma in Architecture course which was available at that stage. The Dip Arch course allowed a student to work in an architect's office while studying. This enabled the student to earn sufficient remuneration to pay his varsity fees. Stan found that after three months working in an architect's office, he learnt more about the practice of architecture than the three previous years at University.

Stan and Lyn were happily married for 64 years. Their son Gary is an architect at Harvard University in Boston. Their daughter, Shelly, is a primary school teacher in Johannesburg. Daughter Andi is the MIS manager in a travel business in Irvine California. Stan was grandfather to Bradley, Jonty, Jenna, and Joshua.

Stan's working career started off as a student at the firm of VLOK and VAN DER WESTHUIZEN in April 1960 where he became a partner after graduating in March 1962. This three-man partnership merged with another three-man partnership, MOOLMAN VAN DER WALT in 1969 – which was later registered as MV3 ARCHITECTS. Stan was involved in all aspects of the enlarged architectural practice including the introduction of CAD in 1981 and relocated to Sandton to manage the growing branch office in Sandton in 1991. Stan retired from MV3 Architects in 2005 to practice as a one-man practice under the style of Segal Architects CC until his retirement from practicing architecture in 2022. Stan continued to consult on architectural matters and practiced as an arbitrator, adjudicator, and expert witness until very recently. Stan was a Fellow of the Association of Arbitrators SA since 1996.

During his years in private practice, Stan devoted 24 years of his time as the SAIA representative on the JBCC Board which he chaired for many years, 19 years as the SAIA representative on the PROCSA committee, 7 years as a panelist together with the late Eyvind FINSEN and Dave BRYANT on the Mid-career courses run jointly by SACAP and SAIA, time on the SAIA Client Architect Agreement documents and 10 years as Chair of the SAIA Practice Committee where he was instrumental in preparing the first SAIA Practice Manual in hardcopy. He authored the Revision 3 of Finsen's The Building Contract and drafted A Commentary on the JBCC Agreements. Stan was a Life Member of SAIA and a highly respected colleague. He was particularly admired for his clarity of thought and his calm, level-headed approach to challenges. Stan was a consummate professional and highly skilled practitioner. He was committed to the Institute and the betterment of the profession at large. Generosity towards colleagues, honour and commitment in friendship, and collegiality were his trademarks.
