GROLL, C

Born:

Engineer

Recorded as one of the five engineers of the NZASM who left the Netherlands for the ZAR on 28 July 1887. (In Memorium, [1908]: 10). Was with the group of five engineers (including STEINMETZ and VAN LENNEP) in Komatipoort when two died of malaria (see VAN DER MEULEN and VAN IJSENDIJK) in 1887. Surveyed, with PH BOUTEN in 1888 the alternative route of the Eastern Line through Krokodilpoort and Elands Spruit Valley to replace the earlier proposal surveyed by Machado through Barberton, that being a longer and more costly proposal.

De Jong et al refer to J Groll but he died in 1885. The reference to the Engineers at Komatipoort on p. 106 must be this person.

All truncated references not fully cited in 'References' are those of Joanna Walker's original text and cited in full in the 'Bibliography' entry of the Lexicon.
