One of the five engineers of the NZASM who left the Netherlands for the ZAR on 28 July 1887, the others of the group being GROLL, STEINMETZ, VAN IJSENDIJK and VAN LENNEP. He died of malaria and was buried at Komatipoort. His grave in the cemetery is now incorporated into the golf course, together with that of his compatriot VAN IJSENDIJK who suffered the same fate.
