Born in Assen, Drenthe in the Netherlands. He was the son of Koert Winters (1833–1878), a carpenter and also an architect who built houses in Assen and Emmen in the Netherlands in a style of his own. His mother was Lammegien Koops (1833–1862). He emigrated from the Netherlands in 1889 (Ploeger & de Kock, 1989: 236) at the age of 32 accompanied by his wife and three of his children. His original trade was as a carpenter. On 1 July 1894 he was appointed as Draughtsman to the DPW of the ZAR under WIERDA on a salary of £300 per annum. On 1 August 1895 he was promoted to Supervisor in a temporary position at a salary of £350 per annum but died a month later (MINNAAR, 2000: 40). He married Johanna Abels (1858–1932) in Assen, Drenthe, Netherlands on 1882 10 11, by whom he had six children, Koert (1883–1934), Gerardus Johannes (1885–?), Lambertus Jan (1886–1887), Gezina Engelberta (1888–1965), Jurie Johannes (1891–1966) and Johanna Cornelia (?-?) (Family Search). It is uncertain who of these children accompanied him to the then ZAR. References
