His parents were Jan Christiaan and Gerarda (nee van Zijp). He immigrated to the ZAR where he was appointed as draughtsman in temporary capacity to the DPW of the ZAR in 1895 at a salary of £350 per annum. He died in service (MINNAAR, 2000: 41).
