| | CORNELIUS, Edward StewartBorn: fl. 1927 Died: 1971ArchitectSACA: Reg No: 266 Year registered: 1927 |
NIA (1927); ISAA (1927).
Currently nothing is known of Cornelius's origins nor his training, although it is quite likely that he was related to W Cornelius, a builder and contractor working in Durban. He registered with the Institute of South African Architects in 1927 and entered into partnership with J MEANWELL (cf. CORNELIUS & MEANWELL) in Durban around 1930. He was not listed in Durban after 1932. He left Durban for Cape Town (c1932?) where his address in 1934/35 was c/o the Town Planning Branch, City Hall, Cape Town. He remained, however, a salaried member of the Natal Provincial Institute of Architects from 1934 to 1935. Cornelius enlisted for active service during the Second World War. In 1959 he is listed as a salaried member of the NIA, although with an address in the Cape, namely 'Storeen' c/o Grotto and Fountain Road, Rondebosch where he is still recorded in 1969. (Hillebrand 1986; ISAA mem list) All truncated references not fully cited in 'References' are those of Joanna Walker's original text and cited in full in the 'Bibliography' entry of the Lexicon.
