GERRITSEN, Johannes Cornelis

Architect


Dutch immigrant arriving from s-Gravenhage, South Holland, appointed in August 1895 as Supervisor under WIERDA in ZAR PWD (MINNAAR, 2000: 45). Naturalised burger, served with the Hollander Corps in Platoon 1 where he was wounded in the scrotum and taken captive on 1899 10 21 at the Battle of Elandslaagte and deported as POW to St Helena (Ploeger 1989: 72). He returned to the Transvaal Colony in 1903 and died on the farm Kameeldrif, Pretoria (Ploeger, 1957: 305; Schoeman, 2011: 164).
