Thesis: UCT 1991: An indoor aquatic centre for Cape Town Arthur Barker was born in Pretoria and attended John Graham Primary School and Plumstead High School in Cape Town. He studied architectural technology at the then Cape Technikon (now Cape Peninsula University of Technology) while working part-time. During this time he received prizes for academic work from Cape Provincial Institute of Architects for the best results in the three year course and a Merit Award from the Cape Technikon for outstanding academic achievement. He then studied full-time at the University of Cape Town with a 4th year work apprenticeship with Richard Siefert and partners in London. This was followed by a six months travel tour through Europe. He received the C.G. Saker Scholarship from the University of Cape Town in 1988 and a Class Medal for the best work done during the third year. In 1989 he was awarded the Osborne Prize for the best work done during the fourth year of study and in 1990 the Cape Institute of Architects prize for the best work done during the fifth year. After receiving the B.Arch degree in 1991, he received the Manual and Luby Washkansky Scholarship from the University of Cape Town for Postgraduate Study in Architecture. After completion of university studies he work for the Cape Provincial Administration and KMH Architects, working mainly on hospitals and clinics. In 1996 he taught part-time at the University of Cape Town and in 1997 he took up a full-time post at the Cape Technikon where he remained till 2009. He co-ordinated the 4th year BTech programme from 1998 onwards and received a Cape Technikon Merit Award for outstanding teaching achievement in 1998 and a distinguished teachers award in 2001. He acted as Head of Department in 1998. He also set up and ran an NRF sponsored housing research programme and published papers on energy efficiency in low-income housing at two international and three local conferences. In 1999 he received a Commonwealth Scholarship and studied Environmental Engineering and Design at the Bartlett School of Graduate Studies, University College London. A limited architectural practice was undertaken between 1997 and 2003 and in 2004 he set up a joint practice Barker Lourens Architects. In 2010 he was appointed lecturer at the University of Pretoria where he co-ordinated the final year Masters Programme. He obtained his PhD on the domestic architecture of Gawie FAGAN in 2012. He has examined at Durban and Tshwane Universities of Technology and the Universities of Johannesburg, Free State, Pretoria and Cape Town. He is also an accreditation board panellist for the South African Council for the Architectural Profession.
