'In 1938, while working in London for Manchester and Lodge, he went on a motoring trip to Italy for the first time... During the War [WW2] he served in the South African Air Force, then in the Western Desert attached to Allied Forces Headquarters, and was later transferred to a special unit in Italy. At the Rome headquarters of Italian Radio he met his future wife, an announcer and member of the Italian underground. Back in South Africa he would become the architect for Olivetti and enthusiast for things Italian...' (Chipkin 1993:257).
