GROENEWALD, Gertruida Francina - Trudi

Trudi Groenewald (nee van den Heever) qualified from the University of Pretoria in 1972. She was one of the last group to study part time at the University while she worked for BURG DOHERTY BRYANT & PARTNERS who she had joined in January 1965. She finished the 8 year course in 7. After quilifying she became a partner with MOORE & NEL in Pretoria for two years. She then traveled and spent 1976 working for The Austin Company (Multi-disciplinary Development Company), Madrid, Spain and then two years with Clark, James, Coupland Architects in Alberta, Canada.

In 1979 she returned to South Africa and again joined BURG DOHERTY BRYANT & PARTNERS in the Pretoria office. In 1980 she moved to Cape Town as an associate in the firm and from 1981 until 1990 was partner in charge of the Cape Town office, becoming a Senior partner in 1987.

In 1990 she and Deborah PRELLER started the firm GROENEWALD PRELLER ARCHITECTS CC in Cape Town.

Trudi is a member of the South African Institute of Architects, the Cape Institute of Architects of which she was President from 1991 to 1993, South African Council for the Architectural Profession where she was Vice-President from 2002 to 2005. From 1995 to 1999 she was a member of the Planning Advisory Board of the Provincial Administration of the Western Cape and from 1995 to 1998 she sat on the University of Cape Town's Building Development Committee. From 1990 to 1996 she was Adjudicator for the Cape Times Centenary Awards. Trudi is also a member of the Royal Institute for British Architects and has certification from the Royal Architects Institute of Canada as well as being an associate member of the Association of Arbitrators.

Trudi remembers as a student working on the Munitoria building which was imploded on 2013 07 07.
