'From the 1950s, well into the 1980s, the architect Eric Meyersohn's small domestic practice met a tide of often wealthy clients of a particular kind who wanted to be associated with elegant, well-built houses fitted out with high-quality joinery, vernacular finishes, Cape quarry tiles flagstones and large outdoor entertainment areas around old trees - to avoid the brashness of the nouveau riche classes. These are the clients that wanted an 'Eric Meyersohn house' that only negotiated contracts with specialised builders could buy' (Chipkin 2008:397 side-note).
