Riva Borkowf was born on 6 January 1925 in Lithuania. The family left owing to increasing anti-Semitism when she was a young girl and they ended up in South Africa.

She studied architecture at University of the Witwatersrand, there she met Jacques MORGENSTERN and they were married in December 1950, following their respective graduations. Over the next two years she studied Town Planning, earning her Diploma in 1952. Riva was proclaimed as "The first woman in the Union to receive a Diploma in Town Planning."

Riva and Jacques established a joint architecture practice named MORGENSTERN & MORGENSTERN.

The Morgensterns had six daughters.
