Was the eldest daughter of Edward Whitmore and was born in Exeter, Devon, England. In about 1842 she married the Rev John Armstrong who was consecrated Bishop of Grahamstown in London in 1853. The family arrived in South Africa in 1854. In 1856 Frances Armstrong, with the help of Captain C HARVEY, RE, designed the first buildings of St Andrew's College, Grahamstown. Bishop Armstrong died in 1856 and Frances Armstrong returned to England.
