ZONNEVELD, Giel

Of Schiedam, Holland, the Netherlands. Son of Leendert Zonneveld (1843–1918) and Jaapje Pijnakker (1846–1888).

Emigrated 1890. He taught at the Staatsmodelschool, Pretoria in 1893. In 1897 he joined the DEPARTEMENT PUBLIEKE WERKEN of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek as a 2nd clerk (Schoeman, 2011: 209), and is listed in the Longland's Directory of 1899 as 1st clerk. Appeared in an 1897 group photograph of the staff of the ZAR PWD. He is recorded in the papers of WIJERS (Ploeger, 1954: 17) as serving in the Ordinance Section of the Hollander Corps under VAN RIJSSE.

He married Maartje Ida Bruijn (b 1869 10 15 Haarlemmermeer d 1964 06 12 Pretoria) in Pretoria of the then ZAR on 1897 07 28 (Ploeger & de Kock, 1989: 240) by whom he had four children, Jacoba (1898–1932), Giel (1902–1977), Jan Leendert (1908–1937) and Ida Martina (1911–2002). He died in Pretoria, Transvaal (Family Search).
