James Maden submitted an application for membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). The original application for membership had been proposed by W.B. MacCabe and was dated 3 April 1913.
At the time the application to ICE was made, Maden's occupation was recorded as Chief Engineer to the City Improvement Trust of Calcutta, Government of Bengal.
The 'Candidate's Circular' compiled by ICE in 1915, records various information including his education, practical training and work experience. Maden was duly elected as a Member of ICE on 14 December 1915.
ORIGINS, EDUCATION AND TRAINING
Maden was born on 13 February 1879 and his Nationality was recorded as British. He had received his General Education at Burnley Grammer School in Lancashire from 1886 to 1893. He then studied Engineering for a year at The South African College in Cape Town during which time he commenced his practical Training under Mr. Jas MADEN (possibly father? uncle?), the Municipal and Waterworks Engineer at the Port of East London, South Africa.
ENGINEERING EXPERIENCE SUBSEQUENT TO TRAINING
1897 - 1900
As Assistant Engineer at East London, under Mr. John POWELL, Municipal and Waterworks Engineer, the Candidate was engaged throughout on water-supply works, £200,000; electric light and tramway scheme, £75,000; main drainage works, £20,000; refuse destructor, £18,000; and general town maintenance works.
In 1897 he was selected to assist Mr. Thomas STEWART, M. Inst. C.E., Consulting Engineer to the East London Municipality, during his investigations for locating a proposed dam, pipe line, service reservoir, etc.
1902 – 1903
As Superintending Engineer under Mr. J.D. SHANNON, Assoc. M. Inst. C.E., New Works Department, Salt River, Cape Town, he was engaged on new carriage and boiler shops, station extensions, drainage and water-supply works, and subway construction, etc., about £30,000.
1903 – 1910
As Borough and Hydraulic Engineer to the Corporation of King William's Town, Cape Colony, he designed and executed, departmentally, during his 7 years' term of office, a complete water-supply scheme, costing £50,000; improvements to distributing system, £12,000; new road construction, £25,000; storm-water drainage scheme, £22,000; main drainage works, £18,000; public abattoirs, £3,500; main and sub-fire stations, stables and workshops, £7,500; alterations to electric-power station; and many other minor works – altogether disbursing £150,000.
Maden was elected as a Member of the Institution of Municipal and County Engineers M.I.M.C.E. on 3 March 1906.
1911 – 1912
As Divisional Engineer, responsible only to Mr. O.C. Ormsby, M. Inst. C.E., Agent to Messrs. George Pauling and Company, Contractors for the great Tata Hydro-Electric Scheme, Lonavla, near Bombay. On this scheme he had control of works estimated to cost £300,000, comprising four miles of masonry duct, four aqueducts, three tunnels, one masonry dam, 1,200 feet (365.76 meters) long and 45 feet (13.72 meters) high, and 2 ½ miles (4.02 kilometers) of track for two lines of 6 feet (1.83 meters) diameter steel pipes.
1912 – 1913
As Deputy Chief Engineer to the City Improvements Trust of Calcutta, he has personally designed general improvement, road and re-housing schemes, including sewerage, water supply, etc., estimated to cost £778,000. Salary at this time £1,000 per annum.
1913
In April last Mr. E. P. Richards, M. Inst. C.E., resigned his position as Chief Engineer to the Trust, when the Candidate was appointed to succeed him. Salary at the present time £1,250 per annum.
