BArch 1966 (Cape Town) Born in Johannesburg, the fifth son of Luigi 'Gigi' LUPINI from his second wife. Graduated with a Degree of Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Cape Town on 8 December 1966. Registered as a member of the Institute of South African Architects (Transvaal Provincial Institute) on 2 April 1970. Obituary Italo Carlo Lupini sadly passed away on the 3rd March 2023 after a short illness, aged 83 and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his endearing wife, Nineta, his 4 sons and 1 daughter and several grandchildren. Italo obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Architecture from the Cape Town University on the 8th December 1966. He started his architectural career with Messrs J Cook and Cowen where he spent two years cutting his teeth. He then moved to H Taljaard Carter and Partners for a year and commenced practising as an architect in 1969 and continued to practice up to the middle of February 2023 when he fell ill. One of the quirks of his very first solo run as an architect was that he was not keen on clients knowing that they were doing works with a new practitioner and so started his project numbering at number 1969, the same year of his commencement! Italo was a keen car and motorcycle racing enthusiast and was involved in team racing throughout the 60's and 70's. He was one of the people who were instrumental in bringing the KTM brand into South Africa and loved motorcycles of any shape, form and size and was the owner of a vintage 1929 Harley Davidson, complete with suicide clutch. He was also a keen outdoorsman and spent many hours fishing the coastlines of South Africa with his sons. His many stories – from his youthful exploits to his uncanny knack of picking out the funny flaws of his clients, told around the tea table of his practice, Lupini Architects are sadly missed and will never be forgotten. Italo was a successful architect throughout his practising life and was part and parcel of several practices, notably, Lupini Robinson Harrington Gould, Lupini Robinson Architects, and then finally Lupini Architects as well as Renaissance Architects. His partners throughout the years will no doubt have fond memories of his antics in the office but above all else, his skills in being able to capture a design and execute his works flawlessly. He was passionate about design and would always remind those willing to listen about his design pedigree proudly sharing how his parents immigrated from Bergamo, Italy and were descendants of a long line of Artists, Artisans, Sculptors and Architects who plied their trades in the Lombardy region since a traceable 1415AD. Italo was responsible for many iconic buildings and one of his defining projects was the design and execution of the swimming pool cover to the Linden Swimming Pool which graced the cover and appeared in the book written by his good friend, the late Alan Robert Lipman, titled Architecture on my Mind: critical readings in design. Italo had close ties with South African football legend Kaizer Motaung and he was responsible for a large part of the redesign and planning of the sporting facilities for the Kaizer Chiefs Football Club over the years. Italo's quirky smile and off-the-wall sense of humour with his love of all things Monty Python and Gary Larson will forever be missed by all who had the fortune of being a part of his life.
