Gwendoline Elizabeth Fagan was born on 25 September 1924 in the Little Karoo town of Victoria West. She grew up in the care of an uncle on a farm in the grain-growing district of Moorreesburg until the age of seven when she went to live with her mother, then a singing teacher in Stellenbosch.
Gwen matriculated from Rhenish Girls' High School, Stellenbosch, in December 1942. She studied Medicine at the University of Cape Town (MB.CH.B. 1948) and worked as a medical practitioner until 1969. Thereafter she joined her husband, Gabriël FAGAN, as a historical researcher and landscape planner. Their son, Henry FAGAN, is an engineer. Gwen has always been an avid gardener.
Was a recipient of the Simon van der Stel Foundation - Heritage South Africa Gold Medal in 1992. List of projects With photographs
