With heavy hearts, we, the family of Phill Mashabane, share the news of our dad's passing. Phill was not only a visionary architect but also a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, mentor, and inspiration to us all. His journey was not just about architectural marvels but about touching lives and shaping communities, leaving an indelible mark on the world. Phill dedicated over 30 years to shaping the architectural landscape of South Africa and beyond. His legacy of excellence, social impact, and education will forever be remembered by all who knew him.
In 1995, Phill co-founded MASHABANE ROSE and ASSOCIATES alongside his dear friend Jeremy ROSE, embarking on a journey that would redefine the architectural landscape of South Africa. Over the span of three decades, Dad's work spanned various sectors, from commercial to residential, from retail to education, with a particular focus on preserving our rich heritage.
His passion for architecture knew no bounds. From master planning to urban design, from museum architecture to heritage conservation, Dad poured his heart and soul into every project he touched. His portfolio stands as a testament to his dedication and his vision for a better, more beautiful world.
But Dad's impact extended far beyond his architectural achievements. He was a committed educator, sharing his knowledge and wisdom with students across Africa. He was a mentor, a friend, and a guiding light for countless aspiring architects.
Among his many accolades, Dad was honored with the SAPSA Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Architecture in 2016, a recognition of his unwavering commitment to excellence and his profound impact on our profession. His pursuit of knowledge was relentless, as evidenced by his completion of Harvard Law School's Program on Negotiation and Leadership in 2019, this among many other academic qualifications.
Phill Mashabane was not just a pillar of the architectural community; he was also deeply involved in various cultural and educational initiatives. His contributions to projects like the South African Apartheid Museum, Hector Pieterson Museum, and Mandela House speak volumes about his dedication to preserving our heritage and educating future generations.
As we mourn the loss of our beloved dad, we remember him as a principled, consistent and loving father who applied the same yearning for excellence and precision in his work to raising and protecting his children. We take solace in the knowledge that his legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the structures he created. His vision, his passion, and his unwavering commitment to excellence will continue to inspire us all as we take on his baton of building communities and preserving cultural heritage through his work.
Our thoughts and prayers are with all his family, friends, colleagues, and the global architectural community during this difficult time.
