Born in Amersfoort, Netherlands, died in Wassenaar. Son of Jacob Adriaan VAN KRETSCHMAR VAN VEEN, Director and Railway Engineer of the NZASM, who, through this bond fired his interest in and love for South Africa. He trained as Civil Engineer at the Technical University of Delft, qualifying in 1916. He was sent to the Dutch East Indies in the service of the Hollandsche Aannemings Maatschappij, where he was engaged in harbour construction at Surabaya until 1921. From 1924 until 1927 he served the same company constructing the harbour at Walvis Bay, acting at the same time as consul for the Netherlands at Swakopmund. In 1928 he returned to the Netherlands. From 1938 to 1946 he lived in Cape Town and worked on the harbour extensions and Foreshore reclamation project, in which the South African subsidiary, the HOLLANDSE AANNEMINGS MAATSKAPPY SA (Edms) Bpk played a prominent part, also in the construction of the Duncan Dock, the Sturrock Graving Dock, the eastern pier and the yacht harbour. On his return to the Netherlands he was appointed to the board of this company, a position he held until his retirement in 1964. He was director of the Netherlands Bank of South Africa, served on the executive of the Afrika-Instituut at The Hague and was chairman of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Stigting Moederland. He did much for the Zuid-Afrikaans Hospitaal en Diakonessenhuis in Pretoria. List of projects With photographs
