FYVIE, Horace

Born: c1885
Died: 1964

Architect

SACA:
Reg No: 39
Year registered: 1927

Sometimes spelt FIJVIE.

TPIA (1927); ARIBA (1927); ISAA (1927).

Was probably born in South Africa. He was articled in Kimberley to DW GREATBATCH from 1904 to 1908 and in 1909 became assistant to AW HOSKINGS, ARIBA, and to G St John Cotterill (he wrote the name COTTRILL in that way) in Johannesburg. In 1907 Fyvie appears to have been working in Kimberley: 'H Fyvie of Kimberley' was recorded as winner of the Student's Prize for 'A triple arched entrance to a Public Park near Cape Town' (SAAE&S Jnl Apr 1907:113) before joining the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT in Pretoria around 1909/1910, where he remained until the outbreak of the First World War when he enlisted with the Gordon Highlanders, a lieutenant by 1916. The PWD annual report (1918) noted that he was serving in Enslin's Horse. At some point he was noted as working in HM Office of Works in London.

He returned to the PWD in Pretoria and took the RIBA examination in 1926; he was elected an Associate member of the RIBA in 1927 and in the same year he resigned from public service to join W HARRISON in partnership in Bloemfontein (cf. HARRISON & FYVIE).

In 1933 he opened a branch office in Springs, but left the partnership in 1937, continuing to work in Springs and Johannesburg on his own account. Currently not much has been recorded of his work in the area. At some point he was in partnership with HR EDDY as FYVIE & EDDY in Springs, the address in 1959 was Lochiel House, P.O. Box 74, Springs, Transvaal. He retired in 1959.
