PIERNEEF, Jacob Hendrik

Born:

Artist

Jacob Hendrik Pierneef was born in Pretoria on 13 August 1886. His father, Gerrit Pierneef was a builder from the Netherlands and his mother was a descendent of the voortrekkers. The family moved to the Netherlands during the Anglo-Boer war and Pierneef returned to South Africa at the age of 18.

He was encouraged to study art by established artists, one of whom was the sculptor Anton van Wouw who was his godfather. He became a well known artist in South Africa where his modernist and geometric style revolutionised South African art. He is best known for his paintings of panels at the Johannesburg Park Station.

He did a woodcut for the book By die monument by Totius with poems of the Vrouemonument.
