Born in 1891 in a little village in the south of Hungary. He went to school in Budapest and then to the city's Academy of Arts where, in 1910, he won a travelling scholarship which enabled him to extend his art studies in Paris, London and Rome. He moved to Germany in 1919 fulfilling commissions to paint frescoes for public buildings, designing tapestries and creating several stained glass windows. Conscious that the Nazi take-over of power would curtail his freedom of expression he fled to Britain in 1934 where he lived and worked until his death in 1975. He has done several stained glass windows for South Africa, all being made in England with glass specially made for him by those same methods used in the Middle Ages.
