With the signing of the peace of the Anglo-Boer War in 1902 the military functions of the IMPERIAL MILITARY RAILWAYS (IMR) were passed to the newly created civil authority of the Central South African Railways under the direction of Edouard Percy Cranwill (later Sir) GIROUARD.
At the formation of Union in 1910 the SOUTH AFRICAN RAILWAYS AND HARBOURS was formed, incorporating the Central South Africa Railways, and although various railway activities gradually merged throughout the Union, activities only finally ceased in 1916.
