PhD thesis title; Constructing Place: towards a phenomenological framework for architecture in the twenty-first century. Supervisor Dr AAJ BARKER. In her thesis the promovenda situated the problem of place in contemporary architectural discourse. Her study identified ocularcentrism and the intellectualization of architectural theory and praxis as phenomena that compromise the ontology of place. To counter these concerns, a reciprocal triadic framework, underpinned by the philosophical position of phenomenology was developed. The constitutive parts of this triad each denote a dimension of place and are applied to a set of concrete and poetic multidisciplinary cases. By doing so, her study articulates three phenomenological categories that enable the interpretation, conceptualization and representation of place. |
