MANTE, Johannes Marte

Contractor


Born in Watergraafsmeer, Netherlands. He arrived in Pretoria as a contractor. Of his early awarded contracts were the Mining Commissioners Offices in Heidelberg and the Krugersdorp Court House. He served the NZASM as contractor, being responsible for the construction of the section of the NZASM Eastern Line between Pretoria Station and east bank of the Apies River, including the NZASM Eastern Line Bridge over the Apies River, and various contracts on the NZASM South-Western Line.

With the advent of the Anglo-Boer War he enlisted with the Platoon 2 of the Hollander Corps where he saw action at the Battle of Elandslaagte, being captured on the 1899 10 21 and deported as Prisoner-of-War to St Helena. He was awarded the ZAR Oorlogsmedalje for services to the Hollander Corps. After the war he returned to Pretoria, in time moving to Garsfontein, where he later died.
