He was born in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia), son of a Dutch ‘Reformed’ dominee.
He was from Enschede, the Netherlands and may have done his architectural training there. By 1960 he must have been in South Africa as he designed the Nederlandssprekende Hervormde Gemeente Maranatha, Parktown in that year, pro bono. He must have done the Qualifying examinations at the University of the Witwatersrand School of Architecture. He is recorded as being retired to Kramerstraat 49, Rotterdam the Netherlands by 1969.
