Eric Macaulay Ednie GOURLEY was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on 9 March 1905, the son of Archibald Gourley, coal merchant and his wife Elizabeth Atherson[?] Ednie. From 1925 He studied for his diploma in architecture at the Royal Technical College, Glasgow. In 1931 he joined the practice of Wylie Shanks & Wylie where he remained for five years. He emigrated to South Africa in the mid-1930s and took a post in the Architectural section of the City Engineer's Department in Johannesberg. He was in this post when he applied for membership of the RIBA and still there in 1969. He was elected ARIBA on 10 July 1939, proposed by Robert HOWDEN, A Stanley FURNER and Gordon LEITH.
He registered with SAIA and SACA in 1939, Re. No. 735. Recorded in 1959 as member of the TIA, working as a salaried member in the employ of the Johannesburg City Engineers’ Department.
His private address in 1939 was 4, Houghton Drive, Johannesburg, and his business address in the 1930s was City Hall, Johannesburg.
