After finishing his schooling at Pretoria Boys' High School he went on to study architecture at the University of Pretoria obtaining his degree in 1987. His first job after qualifying was with THOMASHOFF + PARTNER ARCHITECTS where he was responsible for the design of domestic buildings. In 2003 he took some time off to travel through Europe and amongst the places he visited was the Notre-Dame du Haut by Le Corbusier.
