Menu Home Upfront Now Up Books Towns Structures People Firms Lexicon THERON, Beyers de Wet Born: Died: 2025 05 04 Landscape Architect Dear ILASA members, It is with deep regret that we pass on the sad and tragic news that Beyers de Wet Theron passed away on 4th May 2025 following a break-in and robbery at his home in Napier, Western Cape. Beyers was an academic and an intellectual and held two master's degrees in the field of Landscape Architecture. Since the 1980's he lectured in this discipline at the Cape Technikon and later at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology until he retired in 2012. He was an amazing plant enthusiast and inspired many of his students to broaden their plant knowledge. He was highly thought of by his colleagues at these institutions and was willing to help wherever possible. In 1990, Beyers Theron was commissioned to prepare a revised Landscape Masterplan for the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens in Cape Town under the curatorship of Brian Huntley. Most of this design has been implemented and forms the shape and structure of the garden and its associated buildings that one sees today. Many of the landscape architects and technologists practicing today in South Africa were taught by Beyers and he will be remembered by his colleagues in the academic world for his service to education and the promotion of the landscape profession. When he retired, he moved to the small Western Cape town of Napier where he could enjoy a life in the countryside and pursue his passion for gardening. May his soul rest in peace.
