HART, Edward Goyen

Born: 1889
Died: 1947

Architect

Edward Hart was articled in Britain to H Dare Brown, a gifted Arts and Crafts architect, from February 1906 to February 1909. On completion of his articles Hart remained in Dare Brown's office as a junior assistant until about May 1909 when Dare Bryan died. Hart was appointed an assistant architect to the Tredegar Estate, Newport in Monmouthshire from June 1910 to 1911. In 1911 he left for South Africa, arriving in April 1911. In South Africa he joined the office of DW GREATBATCH, MSA, in Kimberley as chief assistant and remained with GREATBATCH & TIMLIN until 1920 when he joined BLACK & FAGG in Cape Town as an assistant. He took the RIBA special post-war qualifying examination in Cape Town in 1922 in which year Black died. The only building known to be by Hart is House Goyen Hart and dates from sometime before (about 1930?) 1933, a narrow, double-storey suburban house, simple and symmetrical, and uncompromisingly English in its modest Georgian style. Cumming-George noted it as being designed 'on the lines of a small English house of the early eighteenth century' (Cumming-George 1933:122).

Hart remained in Cape Town becoming successor to the firm Black & Fagg on Fagg's death in 1938. He was elected a member of the Cape Provincial Institute of Architects committee in 1934 on LA ELSWORTH's resignation. Hart, who was well-known as a singer, died in Stellenbosch. The successor to the practice was LG Anderson.
