HOLLAND(S), William Thomas

Born: ?
Died: 1903/4

Architect

Hollands appears to have trained in England under Charles Chapman from 1863 until 1868 after which he was assistant to 'Mr Gwyther' (ARIBA nom papers 1882?) from 1868 to 1874. He joined S John Ingram in partnership in 1874 where he remained until at least 1882. It is not yet certain when he came to South Africa but it appears by about 1883 he was working for the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT in Port Elizabeth. He was invited to draw up plans for a Cottage Hospital at Uitenhage in 1898 but fell ill; although he was paid a fee, the committee eventually called on someone else for plans. The RIBA Kalendars of 1901/1902 and 1902/1903 record him as practising in Port Elizabeth from the same address as HW WALKER; the RIBA Kalendar of 1903/ 1904 recorded him as a deceased member of of the RIBA.

ARIBA 1882; FRIBA 1883. (A/FRIBA nom papers (1882/3); RIBA Kals 1901/2, 1902/3, 1903/4; Uitenhage P & P 1904:189)
