Born: 1865
Died: 1932 02 22

Architect

Was born in The Hague, Netherlands, where he received his education and probably his training. He married Joh[anna?] Cor[nelia?] Pronk in 1892 by whom he had two children. He arrived in the South African Republic from Rijswijk, south Holland, in 1893, working as an architectural assistant with the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT in Cape Town until 1895 when he left for Pretoria to work for the Public Works Department of the South African Republic, although he is first recorded as a Draughtsman, 1st Class only in the Almanak of 1899 receiving an annual salary of £400. Kraan remained with the Department until he set up practice on his own account around 1899. After the Anglo-Boer War he entered into partnership with JB WYERS in Pretoria (cf KRAAN & WYERS) in about 1903/1904, listed in partnership in the 1904 directory. The partnership continued until Kraan's death in 1932.
