Was born in Winberg in the Orange Free State, the son of Dr JR Leech of Cork, Eire and was educated at Clocolan, matriculating in Cape Town. In about 1894 he went on to study architecture at King's College, London and was awarded the gold medal in architecture, the silver medal in building construction and a qualifying certificate in civil engineering; he was also a certificated quantity surveyor. Leech worked in the office of John Belcher in London and in other offices in London during this seven-year period. From 1900 to 1901 he lectured in architecture at the Technical Institute in Norwich and in 1902 he returned to South Africa where he set up practice in partnership with TW MACKEY (cf LEECH & MACKEY) in Johannesburg in 1904. The partnership continued until about 1907. In 1904 he was a senior lecturer in architecture at the Transvaal University College in Johannesburg. Leech emigrated to Canada in 1906 and settled in Vancouver where he obtained a position as a draftsman with Thomas Hooper. He was active in Vancouver, B.C. as Chief Architect for the Board of Education and designer of nearly 20 school buildings for the Board from 1910 to 1914. He died in Los Angeles, California, USA.
